  History

Acta Geologica Hispanica (1966-2002). The precursor of Geologica Acta.

Acta Geologica Hispanica was a journal devoted to the Earth Sciences. It was first published in 1966 as a result of a joint venture between the University of Barcelona and the Spanish Research Council (CSIC). Over the course of 37 years, the journal played a significant role in the dissemination of regional and conceptual contributions within the framework of the geological sciences (Figure 1).

Originally, the main goal of this journal was to provide Spanish geologists with a fast publication medium to divulge research work. Since the 1970's, an active exchange programme prompted the distribution of Acta Geologica Hispanica in 402 worldwide research centers (Figure 2), of which 128 were located in Spain, 176 in Europe, 37 in the USA and Canada, 31 in South America and the Caribbean, and 30 in other countries including Japan, China, India, Turkey, Israel, Australia and various African countries.

Following this first expansion stage, during the 1990's the journal was consolidated in the scientific community, with an increased number of articles of higher scientific impact. During this period the articles focused on studies carried out in different areas of the world, especially in South America (Figure 3). Also, there was a significant increase (Figure 4) in contributions from international research teams, especially in relation to the number of Spanish contributions. In the 1990's, extended summaries in English were included for Spanish and Portuguese manuscripts. A variety of Earth Science papers were published in the normal issues of the journal. Furthermore, special issues covering regional geology (Andes, Cuba and Antarctica) with special attention to South America and The Caribbean were published along those years. Also, special issues on specific subjects and disciplines (Palaeontology - Biostratigraphy, Palaeomagnetic studies, Palaeosismicity, applications of isotopic methods) were published.

In 2000, the regularity and periodicity of the publication was guaranteed, and a higher impact among the Spanish-speaking Earth Sciences community was attained. At the same time, an increased number of English manuscripts were published (57 of 112 articles published in 1998-2001, Figure 5). Furthermore, extended abstracts in English for non-English manuscripts were requested since 1999.

The scope of the journal widened progressively and expanded from regional to worldwide research articles, covering a series of multidisciplinary fields in Earth Sciences. Both facts were the beginning of an evolution process that encouraged the creation of a fully renewed Journal, Geologica Acta. The journal is available for free on the Table of contents.

Geologica Acta

Geologica Acta came into existence in 2003 as a result of this expansion process, and with the aim to be a modern and efficient instrument for the quick spread of Earth Science Research.

Geologica Acta is a non-profit, OPEN ACCESS international journal. This peer reviewed journal publishes four issues per year of original research, editorials, short letters and book reviews related to the world of the Earth Sciences.

The journal is funded by the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), the Institute of Earth Sciences "Jaume Almera" (ICTJA-CSIC), the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC), the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB), the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC) and the Institut Geologic de Catalunya (IGC). It receives additional financial support from the publications department of the Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas, CSIC).

The scientific team of Geologica Acta is made up of five Editors who are academics from the above-mentioned institutions and work hand in hand with Managing Scientific Editors from research centres from all over the world. GeA also boasts a Scientific Advisory Board of about sixty professionals from all fields of Earth Sciences.

The Journal is indexed and abstracted in Science Citation Index Expanded, Georef, Pascal, Biosis Previews, Latindex, Scopus, Geological Abstracts, Geographical Abstracts, Chemical Abstracts and the Spanish ICYT and Redalyc. The quality profile of Geologica Acta has been reaffirmed since 2007 when it was included in the category of Geology of the Journal Citation Reports. Since then the journal has shifted in position between the first and second quartile of the Journal Impact Factor list.
